For a few years, the Festival has emphasised the exceptional contribution of creators whose career left its mark on cinema by providing the festival-goers with an anthology of their filmography. After Paris, where he had a retrospective dedicated to him with the collaboration of Centre Pompidou, it is the turn of Saguenay to pay homage to Guy Maddin’s remarkable talent, a man who’s given himself to his WORK for more than 20 years.

Born in 1956 in Winnipeg where he still resides, Guy Maddin is, above all, a passionate of silent movies, the themes of which he regularly makes pastiches of. His creative activity revolves around memory: memory of the postmodern world, affected and aloof, and the more intimate human memory, self-referencing and poetic. Set in the expressionist movement light, his work fuses styles and gets organized around the notions of plasticity, musicality and lyrics while showing scriptwriting and technical inventiveness.

A privileged access to the WORK of an artist of the calibre of this genius image handyman’s, considered by many as the most famous of unknowns cineastes, allows a tangible incursion into today’s cinema through the vision of a remarkable artist. Emphasizing the exceptional contribution of this film craftsman is discovering a most uncommon and topical WORK which, because it reveals a foundation of unquestionable modernity, represents an invaluable inspiration for a generation of young creators in full bloom.
