Everything is allowed in cinema, but at what price? Who has not started editing on the first notes of Radiohead to think about replacing them by an original song from their best friend’s band? Who has not put a project on hold, unable to find the perfect copyright free music? Even though it is essential to the language and signature of filmmakers, all this music does not belong to us straight away. Two specialists of royalties in the field of audiovisual production will reveal to you everything you need to know to direct and edit with peace of mind.
Lucie Bourgouin
A graduate of the Université de Montréal’s Faculty of Music, Lucie Bourgouin has over 30 years of experience in management and negotiations of royalties on a national and international level. After several years during which she worked among the music rights management organizations SDE (Procan) and SODRAC as well as the Société Radio-Canada, Ms. Bourgouin founded in February 1995 the rights clearance service PERMISSION INC.
PERMISSION INC, as a rights clearance agency, provides integrated consulting services, research, negotiations and release of royalties, and is particularly (but not exclusively) active in the field of audiovisual production. One of its main challenges in recent years has certainly been the release of musical rights for the film C.R.A.Z.Y., Ms. Bourgouin has also worked on many other films and documentaries like Café de Flore, Heartbeats, A Sunday in Kigali, Borderline, Dédé, à travers les brumes and Polytechnique.

Lyne Lanoue
Lyne. Lanoue is trained in Arts, letters and communications and she has been working at SOCAN for the last 25 years. She first worked at the Licensing department before joining the Member services team. She holds the position of account manager, movies and TV, on that team since 1998. She ensures that the composers, authors and music publishers receive their royalties for the diffusion of their music in Canada and around the world. Besides the members of SOCAN, she is also in contact with many producers of audiovisual works and several Canadian broadcasters. Lastly, she hosts discussion and information workshops on the role and functioning of SOCAN, for the benefit of industry professionals and college and university students.
