EXPRESIÓN EN CORTO, Guanajuato International Film Festival

Throughout a program presented by a foreign festival, find out how the cinema from abroad is made and explore the various universes reunited into a revealing portrait painted in the colors of the invited country.

Designed in order to send the short and REGARD’s festival-goers on a journey, this year’s 10th Carte blanche has been entrusted to the Guanajuato Expresión en Corto International Film Festival. Since 1997, Expresión en Corto organizes, during the last week of July, a very elaborate program which includes more than 400 films within 10 days. Its competition, which stands out with six main categories, is acknowledged as the largest, most complete and most diversified one in Mexico. Beyond fiction and animated short films, documentaries, experimental films and Mexican feature films, the festival also offers a wide range of workshops, conferences, master classes and other activities opened to the public and to short film professionals.

A little spice on Québec’s winter background

Going from tragi-comic westerns to the «hard» and urban films of the capital’s violent nights, the following selection, although quite strong on comedy, brings a modern and eclectic outlook on the Mexican short film production.

Muestra Mexicana 2010 is an overview of the best present-day Mexican shorts, offered by Expresión en Corto‘s artistic director, Nina Rodriguez, who will be with us in Saguenay for the films’ presentation.

• Los dos Pérez of Adolfo Davila

  Two brothers meet after long time, to film a western movie that ends in a comic tragedy.

• Firmes of Yordi Capo
  Mexico > 2010 > fiction > 10 min

  A private tries to stand at attention during a long official ceremony in spite of the obstacles he faces, such as the sun, sweat, tiredness and an insistent mosquito. While he listens to the official speech, the soldier becomes aware of the difference between the many who follow and the few who lead.

  Cyra suffers because of a seed that got stuck inside of her body and has started to grow. Her grandfather is trying to protect her from rejection and discrimination in the town where they live taking her to a better place.

• Xochimilco 1914 of Esteban Azuela, Mara Soler, Carlos Gamboa

  On the morning of December 4th, 1914, Pancho Villa and Emiliano Zapata meet for the first time. An original stenographic record of their conversation just hours before they took over control of Mexico City. Xochimilco 1914 is an animation that visually explores the words of these revolutionary heroes and their historic repercussion.

  In the Ariel’s photo studio, downtown Mexico City, the taking of portraits resists change. Francisco, the owner, continues to uses a technique which is both artistic and archaic : he takes a black and white photograph and colors it with oil paint.

  Emilio, Jonas and Pedro want to have some fun in the city at night. Emilio and Jonas have a very peculiar idea of how to have fun. Pedro will have to make a choice, wether to participate in these fames, with the risk of encountering a new person within himself.

  At fifty something, Betina finds love over the Internet. She leaves her monotonous life behind to go meet her virtual fiancé on the other side of the country.
